Washington University, Lopata Gallery
M2 Architecture Studio renovated the 4,900 sf Lopata Gallery at Washington University. The original space consisted of an interstitial space (22 ft wide) between the Lopata building and Urbauer Hall. This space was essentially non-functioning and was used primarily as a path to access additional buildings on campus.
M2’s design approach resulted in a new bright, open, and functional space for undergraduate engineering students. M2 addressed the verticality of the space, which included additional first floor areas for dining and study, and a new stairway as a focal point. Bright color, lighting, and different textures were infused into the space for a light, airy, and open space that nurtures learning and collaboration.
